NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release

Local Folk/Bluegrass Duo Returns from European Tour

Moriah, NY – Staber and Chasnoff, a traditional folk and bluegrass duo from Moriah, New York, have just returned from their second European tour.

From May 12 through June 2, 2004, Staber and Chasnoff traveled thousands of kilometers by car to play 11 gigs in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic.

May is International Bluegrass Month, and European countries celebrate in grand style with a multitude of festivals and concerts, including the European World of Bluegrass (EWOB) festival. Participation in these festivals is by invitation, and Staber and Chasnoff were one of only 4 American bands to play in the EWOB series.

"It is a real pleasure to play in Europe, where music is so highly valued and the various styles that comprise the spectrum of bluegrass music are so appreciated," stated Judith Chasnoff.

Dick Staber (vocal, mandolin) and Judith Chasnoff (vocal, guitar) have been performing their unique brand of traditional folk and bluegrass-based acoustic music since 1993. When they first met, Judith lived and worked in Montreal, and Dick moved from the Catskills to the Adirondacks to be closer to her. The couple has lived in Moriah for over 7 years now. Their repertoire runs the gamut from traditional ballads and dance tunes to many songs that Dick Staber has penned in the last few years, including a tune called "Champlain Valley Home", the opening track on their latest CD.

Staber and Chasnoff released their self-produced album Free to Dream in 1998. In the fall of that year, they toured Holland and Germany to support the release. Their second album, Just the Two of Us, was released in 2002, and boasts a generous collection of 19 songs, fourteen of them Dick Staber originals.

Judith Chasnoff began playing guitar as a teenager during the folk boom era, and cites Joan Baez as one of her idols. She studied voice at The High School of Music & Art in New York City.

Dick Staber is well known within the bluegrass community for his unique, self-taught mandolin playing style and for his many songwriting credits. He has played with a number of big names including Del McCoury ('69-'75), Don Stover ('77-'78), and Bob Paisley ('79-'81). His credits include contributions on numerous albums, and Dick released 3 albums of his own prior to his collaboration with Judith Chasnoff.

It was on a trip to Holland in 1982 with Bob Paisley and the Southern Grass, that Dick formed a relationship with a promoter that resulted in his returning to that country on several occasions over the years, including the two European tours with Staber and Chasnoff.

Staber and Chasnoff will be performing at a number of events and venues in New York and Vermont’s Champlain Valley this summer. A complete performance calendar, discography and music samples can be found on their website, www.staberandchasnoff.com.
